Energy Transfer in the Ecosystem

Energy is ultimately sourced by the sun.

Autotrophs are also known as producers in a food chain or energy pyramid. They use the sun’s energy to create food energy with the process of photosynthesis.

Heterotrophs are also known as consumers in a food chain or energy pyramid. They obtain nutrients by consuming others.

  • Herbivores eat producers.
  • Carnivores eat animals.
  • Scavengers eat dead things.
  • Omnivores eat both producers and animals.
  • Decomposers break down dead things.

10% of the energy from one level transfers to the next level, and the other 90% is used to power life and burned off as heat.
